Menu Items difficult to see due to background image

Hello, I am wondering if there is a way to either use a gradient with opacity in the frontpage background image, or create an colored background with opacity to make the menu as well as the background image's text content more clear to read.

I viewed a number of other forum posts, but have not had much success. My skills are limited...sorry.
