Can i turn of comments date etc...

Yes, you can disable comments, date (but only if you are using default article wrapper).
In the Steakhouse theme, there's article wrapper "news_grid" created and here you can't disable date, and other elements, because you can change only attributes connected with this article wrapper (rows, cols, title_length, text_length, link_url, link_label, date_format).
