how do I add new widget areas?

Hi,
I need to add few new widget areas in the middle section of the theme. I have a lot of categories that i would like to show in the middle section in two columns, each row divided by a banner, but the mainbody top, mainbody, mainbody bottom with inset do not allow me to do so (the nsp widget in each widget area is not aligned with the other in the same row). I thought that adding 2 new widget areas with the same css rules as top 1 and top 2 areas would solve my problem.
