Images not showing up

Hi,
I can upload an image using Wordpress or ftp and the results are the same - a broken link icon (square with question mark in centre). If I go to edit the image it appears fine but will not show in gallery or most importantly, on the website.
Any ideas? I have tried using separate ftp with no luck. I have also checked and resaved my permalink settings just to be sure.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as this theme on my server just doesn't seem to want to work!

I have fixed a permissions issue which wasn't letting the images show up when editing a post. However, although the images are now showing in my media and on the posts themselves when editing they aren't showing on the front page when viewed externally...
