Use of a favicon

If you use template for Joomla! 2.5 you can simply upload favicon image via template settings, in other cases you need to overwrite existing favicon file via ftp connection, and remember that favicons are cached by browser extremely long so you can see result in a few hours/days.

Thank you for your answer. I have recovered a favicon in GIF but I guess just put it in the template files will not allow its operation? Are there any lines of code to add a favicon.gif works in place of a favicon.ico?
