I would use this template because I really like "module suffix variations." For this reason I would use the template for a sports website. My question is this: you can use the position of "cart" to put a banner? Or, you can use the "module suffix variations" with another - your - template?
My web sport site is made with "The World News template" but it is very slow templates.

Both options are possible, but replacing search with banner is easier. Please place banner in search position and show me Your site than for more accurate fix.
