Main Slideshow Background and Highlighter

Hi all,
I was hoping someone could help me do the following. Basically I would like a background colour on the main slideshow and also the main highlighter module that would extent right out in both directions as you can see from the attached screenshot. Basically I have marked with the numbers 1 & 2 on the attached screenshot of the effect I am after.

Now just to be clear on this and what I have tried............ I have put in place a background image which of course you can give the effect of creating this kind of background on the homepage but if you use a background image and you navigate to a more simple content page this background image remains which means it looks crap. So I would be looking for a solution that is more of a css background on the slideshow and also a css background on the highlighter that simply went all the ways out in both directions? Any ideas on this?

I'm affraid it's strictly a customization problem.

I would advice to cover it with a png file with transparency and than set it in right place with layer positioning in css.
