Hey Gavick team. I just wanted to take a moment to offer some advice regarding the templates updates you release. When you release them I, for example, go to the template page. In this example, Party Freak, and am presented with the below download options:

Template: gk_party_freak_J!15.tgz (Size: 390 Kb | Hits: 3741)
Source Files: gk_party_freak_rest_files_J!15.zip (Size: 5 Mb | Hits: 2930)
Quickstart: gk_party_freak_quickstart_J!15.zip (Size: 25 Mb | Hits: 2144)
Documentation: gk_partyfreak_documentation_J!15.zip (Size: 6 Mb | Hits: 2439)

I'm never quite sure which files have been updated so just in case I redownload all of them. I don't how many of your members do this but I'm sure I cannot be alone. As a result you incur much wasted bandwidth and server load. If possible could you consider putting a modified date beside each file so we know which ones were updated? Or perhaps a version number also? Thanks.

Hi

Please use the update menu option and choose Your template. There You will have an update version with information abou which files to replace/add/remove. This way You will need to load only pure template package which doesn't weight much.

Thanks for your reply. But I think you are missing the point I am trying to make. When I click download it still takes me to this page (example Party Freak):

http://www.gavick.com/download/article/ ... freak.html

And on this page it lists the following:

Image

It does not specify which of these files have been modified so I just re-download all of them to be sure. I don't imagine that all of them have been updated (or have they)?

So what I mean is Gavick should specify similarly to the below example:

In the above example, I would know that I don't need to re-download Quickstart and Documentation as I previously downloaded them. This makes things easier for the customer and reduces unnecessary bandwidth costs/server load. Do you follow me?

Hi

I understand You completly :)

The case is that You do not need to install anything again. You do not even need to download quickstart. You can download template itself. It's always with the latest version and weight much less then the quickstart.

Hi bellboy,

I'm with you on this one. I have just searched a number of posts trying to get a simple answer on updating templates.

I have read similar replies of "just go there, click this link, copy, and there you go". Obviously they weren't the exact words, but to me (as a new user) it might as well of said that.

I would also like to suggest that Gavick Team please provide some more information about what File/s to use to simply Update.

I go to the link from my Template Manager > gk_mystore > Updates and am presented with a list of files. As a new user I wasn't sure which file to use to update? I'm not given any immediate feedback on what I need to do to simply update?

What I've done is:

1. Copied the old gk_mystore folder via FTP (just in case?)
1. Download the first file (gk_mystore_J!15.tgz)
2. Unzipped it
3. Dragged the gk_mystore folder into my FTP client where my templates overwriting
the existing gk_mystore folder
4. And hope that I have chosen the right file?

I did find another thread saying that template updating has been covered in over 200 posts, which might indicate that it would be great to see a little more info on that template download page.

Hopefully this is on the cards :)

the right page to look at is here :

http://www.gavick.com/updates.html?task=update&id=182

this is for the corporate 2 thou, go to updates on the top of this page, and then find the updates you need then you can see what have changed.

Hi explodedk

Thanks for the quick reply.

Went to www.gavick.com/updates.html?task=update&id=182 and it info was very simple thank you.

I was clicking on the link in my Joomla Template Manager which took me to the Download page. This displays the file list pictured in bellboy's post.

Perhaps these 'Update' links in Template Manager can take a user to the Updates Page first before going to the Download Page.

You must tear your hair out sometimes!

Cheers :)

I think I may have not have been clear in my initial post. As a member of the Gavick Club, I download all the templates to my local system even if I am not currently using them (for backup purposes in case I ever want to in the future).

So whenever I see that a new version has been released I to the page (example from explodedk's post: http://www.gavick.com/updates.html?task=update&id=182), then I click "download" and am presented with the below but no modified date:

    Template
    Source Files
    Quickstart
    Documentation

So just to be sure I re-download all of the files again so I am sure I have the most current version locally on my system. I just think that if each of the above files had a "modified date" beside them, then I would not need to re-download each file every time a template update is done. I know there are times when the documentation, Quickstart and sourcefiles are updated so it is good to show this to the end user. Surely I cannot be the only one thinking this.

Yep that's what I thought you meant. I was on an update mission and ended up posting here. I meant to mention that I certainly agree with more Update/Version info as well.

I'm going to jump in on this one and totally agree with bellboy and take it to another step.

on your downloads pages for the templates it would be nice to have versions in the files, its just assurance of the latest.

also and most important, when upgrading I don't want to do a whole new template install, I only want the affected files to update, keep in mind that we do customize our sites and it overwrites everything. So, if you would make it easier for us to update just the files that need to be without downloading the entire template again.

A suggestion:
*either give us a folder with the updated files and the list of paths so we can do it manually,
OR,
create a zip file with installers of the updated files to download, then we can use our backend admin panel for installing, similar to other components.

this is frustrating.

01. if you go to the update link in the top of gavick page and choose your desired update, you will see which files need to be replaces.
02. we already know many makes customisations - in most templates you can choose to enable override.css which is there for the changes you made not to be lost. we recommend to all to make the changes needed in this file and then override the files that need to be overrided. and you will not loose your customisations...

all you ask for is already there, and has been covered earlier...

only thing not there is the updater for the script, but im not sure this can be done in such easy way as you want it...
