I have need to make a page similar to Gavick's own template page at https://www.gavick.com/joomla-templates.html. Each thumbnail would be a K2 article, in my case.

1) Which extension did you use to show the thumbnails and descriptions?
2) What Menu Item Type did you make that page?

I advise you to use News Show Pro to display thumbnails linked with K2 articles, this is the easiest way to achieve this layout.
