Database Install Error With 1.7 Quickstart

I'm trying to install using the Joomla 1.7 quickstart with The News template. The installer keeps giving me this cryptic error message: Could not connect to the database. Connector returned number: 2. I'm using my standard database and associated user. The install of a previous J1.7 quickstart worked. I'm at a lost to understand why this quickstart fails at the database installation screen.

I finally created another database and user and was able to successfully install the template.
