I'm having some trouble controlling images to the degree I want. I've tinkered endlessly with the various parameters in the Thumbnails section, and they simply don't seem to do exactly what is described in the documentation. The behaviour is very erratic. It is even dramatically influenced by the Image Floating parameter in the Article Layout section. I'm not sure why that would be if the thumbnail control parameters were working properly.

Does anybody else have this problem? I read in another thread that thumbnail control was good in a previous release, but something happened in the latest release? Is that possible?

Anyway, with endless tinkering I have a tolerable layout currently. But it is far from ideal. Can anybody offer any help?

Thanks.

Hi

We haven't notice any problems.
Can you show us your website?
Did you set cache to "0" before making any changes?

It's very difficult to describe all the results I get from trying to playing with all the thumbnail parameters and other parameters that seem to affect the image, such as image float. So maybe I can ask about one particular thing I'm trying to do...

A few weeks back, I wsa able to display the image in my column with a black background. Within that background, the image would be displayed with proper aspect ratio...a vertically oriented image would leave some black space on the sides...a horizontally oriented image might leave some blackspace on the top and bottom. I could control the size of the blackspace to fit my needs, and that would allow me to have a fixed module height regardless of the size or orientation of the original image. That's the main thing I'm trying to accomplish. Now I can't seem to do that. Could you tell me how I need to set my parameters to do that?

Thanks in advance. :)

Okay...I've tried to summarize my experimenting with image control parameters in a simple spreadsheet. (See below.) I'd appreciate it if you would take a look and see what you think. :)

No info??

I really need this badly, so I guess I'm begging a little bit. All I'm looking for is a consistent way to have a fixed box size for the image to fit into while maintaining the aspect ratio.

Please.

I guess you made a few changes to the image settings on my site. While the results did not maintain the aspect ratio, they did put me on the right track to accomplishing what I wanted. :cheer:

So thanks a lot for taking a look at this. I really appreciate it. :)

(If anybody else is having similar issues with image control, let me know and I'll pass on what I now know about controlling image size and aspect ratios, especially with widely varying image sizes/shapes.)

Things have definitely got better. Thanks again. But I still have occasional issues that are very hard to explain. (Impossible for ME to explain  ) I have an example I hope you'll take a look at and see if you can figure it out...

I have two pages (see links below), one for "games" news, another for "other topics" news. The games news page works perfectly...both horizonally and vertially oriented images display exactly as I want them to, in a fixed image area while maintaining aspect ratio (no stretching). The other topics page uses a module which is a COPY of the games module. The only change is content. But the images on the second page do not maintain their aspect ratio. (They are stretched.) I've triple checked all the settings in the two modules...they are identical.

Anyway, if you could take a look at these I'd really appreciate it. Here are the links:

Hope you're having a good new year!

Hi

Try to add this style to css:

Code: Select all
.nsp_art img.nsp_image {
    height: auto !important;
}

Okay...I'll try that later today. (Does the new code go in a particular .css file?)

i'd suggest adding it in overwrite.css and enable that from template manager, this way you won't loose the work on an update...

Thanks. I'll do that.

Just a quick update: This gets very strange from my still-somewhat-newbie perspective. :P I have two pages that work PERFECTLY...my home page and my "Games" page. Here they are...

http://www.grizzledgamer.com/

http://www.grizzledgamer.com/games.html

On all my other pages (pick any from the Games or Other Topics sub-menus), images are stretched across the full column width and stretched to the full (fixed) image height. (They maintain the height I want, but not their aspect ratio.) You can see that the two pages listed above do maintain their aspect ratio, for both horizontally and vertically oriented images, with appropriate blank space as needed.

I've double/triple/quadruple cross-checked all the parameters on the pages that do work vs. the pages that don't work and there is no difference!! Arghhh! I'm stumped.

In conclusion...I'm going to try the css modification tonight, but if that doesn't work, I'll quit pestering in this thread and just ask that this issue be looked at for a future update. I've beat this to death and I'm pretty convinced a bug has crept in somehow related to thumbnail control, particularly how the "Keep aspect ratio" and the "Thumbnail stretch" parameters work.

Thanks again.

It just keeps getting curiouser and curiouser!! :) Kind of a good news/bad news situation...

I entered the new code in override.css and the first screens I looked at were perfect. Every submenu under the menu "Games" is now perfect. BUT...the "Other Topics" and all its submenus still have the same problem! How can that be??!!??

Anyway, I'm very curious what exactly those few lines of code do. And do you have any idea why it would work for some of the pages and not all?

(By the way...THANKS!! Because even though it's still a mystery and not totally solved, all my game pages now look like I want and...ater all...my site is mainly a game site! Heheh.)

One more little tidbit that could somehow be a clue to what's happening/where the problem lies...

I just selected one of the articles from a "bad" page (one of my "Other Topics" pages spoken of above) and activated "Front Page". So now that article showed up on my home page which lists featured articles. My front page is one of the 'good' pages, where images have been showing up correctly. But this one image, from the Other Topics page, now shows up with a 'bad' image. It is stretched to the full width of the column and way too tall, not following the parameters as all the other images on the front page do.

What in the world could cause that? Could it be something about the artilce itself? Or the feed it came from? (Although I'm still wondering why the code fix I did corrected a whole section of my pages but not all the pages.)

Anyway...FWIW.

I need to open this old topic again...

I've upgraded to Joomla 1.7 with the new Memovie template. Everything is going well except one thing:

The same problem described in this thread is back. I've added the code that fixed the old problem to my new override.css file and I've enabled the override, but I still can't get the images to maintain their aspect ratio AND keep the dimensions I've specified.

Can you help me please?

Thanks.

Hi

Please give me an exact page where I can see the problem.

The following page has "Create Thumbnails", "Keep Aspect Ratio", and "Thumbnail Stretch" all set to "ON".

http://grizzledgamer.com/index.php/games

You can see that the images all keep their aspect ratio, but they fill the full width no matter how tall they are. A good example is the "Shippin Out July 31..." article in the third row.

All the other pages (in the "Games" or "News and Other Topics" menu) have the "Keep Aspect Ratio" turned off. This keeps the images the consistent height/width I want, but they are distorted.

Thanks for looking into this.

Hi

Please use the latest version of NSP module and use crop option. This way Your images will be cutted to the desired height. Will be all in the same size bot not stretched.

I installed NSP GK4 1.7 over the top of NSP GD4 1.6, but nothing has changed and my modules still show up NSP GK1.6. Do I need to uninstall 1.6 first? And if so, will it delete all my existing modules?

I guess it's NSP GK4 1.6, but the title is a bit confusing. Thanks for correction.

Do possibly need to download the nsp_interface.psd file listed on that page?

Thanks.

nsp_interface.psd file is necessary only if you want to edit the interface with Photoshop.
