Portal modes not working?

Just installed News Show Pro GK4 ver. 2.6; only Normal mode seems to work? Selecting any of the Portal modes only shows left and right arrows, no article text. Joomla 1.7.1
Is it my selection of layout parameters (which seem OK in Normal mode)?
