Is there a setting in virtuemart I am not aware of or in the template section that will allow me to show actual stars instead of numbers for the customer reviews?

The thread You've mentioned is from over 3 years ago. A lot has changed in Virtuemart since than and right now achieving starts display will require much more changes in code. I'm afraid it's too much to be included in our standard support agreements. Sorry.

Reviews / stars is a major visitor store churn factor in those few precious seconds needed to prevent a customer from cart abandonment. Having such a subtle element on the main above the fold review view while only incorporating the stars inside the review tab under the fold is not the best impact for these landing pages. The fact that this was an issue three years ago in previous templates furthers the question about why it wasn't incorporated into the original quark theme - or at least the option to do so. Providing a little bandwidth for this would be worthwhile I think.

It wasn't an issue. It's just how it was designed in template and implemented. As You can see from the other post bringing this functionality was unsuccessful, so I'm afraid this is beyond forum support, sorry.
