2 different Module views for Desktop and Tablet

I'm trying to have two different layout and views of a module in Bottom1 position. One view is for desktop and the other is for tablets and smaller. I'm using several combinations of the suffixes:
no-desktop
no-tablet
only-desktop
only-tablet

The suffixes seem to do what they are supposed to do except it doesn't collapse the the hidden module position. The desktop module shows in desktop view but there is a blank space along side where the hidden tablet view is and it's same in tablet view. Is there something I'm missing?
