Own 404 error page

Hi,
I have customized an own 404-error-page as a Joomla article. But whatever I try (e. g. setting in JoomSEF) in the case of an error my site is directed to index.php?error=404&itemId=99999. How can I avoid this? Is there any way to deactivate the built-in error page?

We have created this mechanism to embed the error page inside the normal template. If you want to avoid the redirects I suggest to remove the error.php file from the template directory.
