Overlay image with aside menu

Greetings,
Is it possible to have a full screen image overlay when the aside menu is activated? Specifically, I am trying to emulate the overlay effect from the photo architect template on the writer template. In addition, rather than the full-screen overlay opening from the bottom, I would like it to open from the left along with the standard writer asidemenu.
