Images keep correct aspect ration (it is not distorted), but as you correctly found out, they are cut out. Sadly, this is by design and we can't do much about it

. Instead of putting text on image you could use built in IS module feature allowing to add caption to slides.

As I have said, this module was never intended to show images with captions. You might consider using google fonts for IS captions that looks better for you.
