Image resizing - absolutely at my wits' end

For some reason I just cannot get Joomla to display my images correctly. I am using the University template and all I want to do is to get the category blog layout to display properly. No matter how many columns/leading articles I set, it scales my images up to 1,120 x 840px and displays everything in a single column. If it is the University template itself doing this could somebody please advise me how to get rid of it quickly because it is absolutely driving me mad. The image size that it is blowing them up to is absolutely useless and just makes the page look a total mess.

Yes this is done on purpose. If You do not want to use it try rename /html/com_k2/templates/default/category.php to /html/com_k2/templates/default/_category.php and /html/com_k2/templates/default/category_item.php to /html/com_k2/templates/default/_category_item.php
