University Template without K2

Hi

I have just installed the University demo in Joomla 3.4 which I note is using K2. Can I please ask the following questions:

1. Do I have to use K2 with the University Template?
2. If I don't have to use K2, are there any disadvantages or template design issues?

Many thanks,

Rick

Hi,
ad1) you can uninstall or just do not use anymore.
ad 2) it's not so simple , because still you will all views from default articles but you won't be able to use K2 view.

But in general I fully agree that adding K2 is not always a good solution, and some web companies resigns from using it in ther templates, because in J3.4 times in most cases K2 is not necessary anymore.

Hi Oscar, many thanks for your help.
Is there a quick way to find out which of your great templates don't use K2 so that I may be able to review an alternative template?

unfortunately but I guess all GK templates.I know it's madness and its dead end.
But some users still ask for k2 and others say - I don't need it anymore.

But as I said before you can build a website even not touching a K2.

Thanks Oscar.
The two templates that were of special interest to me (out of the box so to speak) was the University and Events. In the demo sales spiel it was not obvious to the novice on definitely requiring K2 to get the look and feel! To this end have I now wasted my money?

k2 and wasted of money?

Not to me it is a judgment that.
All Gavick templates uses K2 , so probably you should known that before, each template is/was described.
So you have two options:
1) Use K2 only for selected sections
2) Do not use k2 and try to use default articles instead for all content - which is also possible

Yes Oscar, I did not fully understand the implications of NOT using K2. I simply chose the template and decided to subscribe to the higher priced option to ensure developers are adequately funded and supported.

What I now find difficult to understand and cannot simply re-create is that when installing the plain University template (without the quickstart and rets_files) that I do not have the same looking front page areas look and feel, of course without the demo images. The 'Minimum Requirements' does not seem to reflect the K2 requirement to get the sale look and feel. Indeed, I originally did not scroll down like you have ultimately indicated that there is some K2 reference if one scrolls down further. I simply liked what I saw on the https://www.gavick.com/joomla-templates/university,165 page, read the minimum requirements, took a look at the Demo and decided to purchase. Here is a link to the screen capture of what I saw on my monitor without scrolling down on which I based my excited decision to purchase - http://www.screencast.com/t/tNWCUFzh0c

My mission is for the University template to at least have the home page look and feel sections, and then insert my own images and relevant modules/ text. Knowing that I have my own events component and relevant modules, I was not trying to re-create the events stuff in that exists in your demo. That is the very least I was expecting when I purchased the template. Could you please be so kind and advise on whether this is easily done from a novice perspective. Ultimately I would like to also do the same for the Events template. I guess what I was looking for was to be provided a module location template that defines all the same areas as in the demo hopefully with blank content samples respectively coloured backgrounds like in the demo version so that I can insert and create my own content

Thank you so very much for your patience and understanding and I am looking forward to you providing a practical solution.

Take care,

Rick

I cannot guarantee you if version without K2 will have exactly this same appearance like demo site.
and I cannot also build for you a website during support.

But I have one advice. On subdomain or localhost install default QuickStart and check how it was made,
and try to use similar settings but using only default articles as a data source.

Thanks Oscar for your kind suggestion. That was going to be my plan of attack of installing the default quickstart and have a look at how it is glued together.

However, I am in radical cancer surgery recovery which has also resulted in some significant serious depression and as such I simply do not have the mental capacity, patience or energy at this point to go down this new road of learning.

Perhaps you can be so kind and please have a talk to some of your developers in coming up with practical templates that can provide some 'home page' magic straight out of the box as shown in the demo sample (no images or content obviously), without having to learn a whole lot of how things may be made to work. I would imagine that there may be other novices that could find the process after buying a template to make it work quite overwhelming.

Thank you for listening.

Some others developers abandon K2 - because for example such a requests.
If you had problem with installing a QS on your hosting it means two thing:
1) It's something wrong with server settings
2) You have to try use Localhost software for such a Joomla try. There are few solutions for that.

About better guides , GK boss promised a better manuals in near future : viewtopic.php?f=284&t=44124
but right now (today) we have what we have.

Okay Oscar, I think we are all done and dusted and somehow I am not able to express my concerns and problems.

For your information, I have not had any installation issues with the QuickStart or the free standing blank installation. What I have had issues with is in not having the time to make the blank installation look like the QS home page demo without using K2.

So, I will close this chapter now and hope that my sale contribution is helping the future development path.

Take care,

Rick
