When I use the Quick Start Joomla 3 John template, and view the home page, it is the Typography page. I have tried it twice now, and both times same result. The last install I did was a 2.5 and it worked fine. Maybe there is a problem with the file?

Its completely fine. Perhaps you have left something in database?
Please clean the database before installation and verify if you are installing to correct db and correct folder.
