Hi, is there anyway that I can duplicate one of the existing module modes? I want to have two versions of the news block mode with different colors.

You can save settings of one module, then create new one, load the settings and change what you need.

If you see in the menu for the module you can choose from various module modes.

What I would like to do is to duplicate the News Block module mode so that I have two of it. The reason for this is I want to display it on two different places with different CSS.

If you need different css styling you can base it on overlaping elements custom module suffix for example. Duplicating module mode woud require editing module core and we don't support this kind of changes.

You can change it (add new modes) but on each module update You lose Your modification

Yes but you have to copy mode you want and change a little bit in free files, and if you update module to new version your changes was lost

There is no way to prevent file overriding when updating module - it is managed by Joomla this way - old files are removed and new ones replaces old. You need to backup your changes first and manually merge them after updating.
