ok this xml worked however still no images show up and the homepage doesn't look like the demo. Also tried the settings file (.json file)

If you want to match the demo layout and content exactly then the best option is to use the quickstart package; this is a full WordPress installation that installs WordPress, the theme, plugins, widgets and demo content to match our demo.

Now you've installed only theme packages and xml file (which doesn't contain widget's content). News2 is mostly based on widgets, so you should try to install the quickstart package:
