How to turn on drop-down menus on home page

I have categories and subcategories and subcategories of subcategories. However, none of the child categories show in a drop-down menu as the live demo template does when mousing-over a category listed on the main menu. Can someone please share what settings control the home page drop-down menu? Thanks
