Joomla 3 - can you point me to directions for removing the article IDs from URLs.

This is not a template thing but Joomla general. You can't remove ID from link because CMS will not know what to display. Instead you should enable SEF links (please read what is need to do so) - then the links will have an article title instead of simple ID.
