Is it possible to place a logo on top of the header image slider next to the text on the slides?

in theory yes, but it request many customization,
because as you saw... we used fixed menu, second what about other subpages where you don't use slideshow (image slider) ?

Much easy would be :
1) add logo inside slides as a part of image - but it won't be click-able
2) and hide logo from top bar

Yes I did try adding the logo to the slides but it didn't look right. I don't need to have it linkable. I tried adding a module but that also didn;t look right either. I thought about adding a module with absolute positioning and z-index which I think will work, but I don't think it will work for being responsive.

That's why if you need RWD - you have to think twice before you will customize template code,
it never is so easy.
