Two column menu behaviors

I am trying to create columns in a few of my menus. I figured out how to do that, but the group is selected all at once and you don't get the individual hover highlight.

This is a normal menu. When I hover over each link, the background color changes as expected.

This is a two column menu with the first item set as "group-yes". Notice that the links below it all highlight the same when the group is hovered over:

(I did remove the group heading line from the css so that is why it is missing)

How would I change the css so that the column menu behaves the same way as a single column menu?
