I was wondering if anyone in your team would have an idea on what could be causing the new 404 errors. Sorry for asking here but I need some professional advice and perhaps you could put me in the right direction. I just discovered for no reason I am getting lots of 404 errors for posts/pages that do not and have never existed! I have just a few examples below. The only thing I did a few days back was to add gallery pages but now the word 'Gallery' has added itself to every posts creating these errors.

e.g.

comic-strip-team-building-creativity/Galleries
teambuilding-thailand/Galleries

I may have found the cause as the same happened to another site with CloudHost. I created a blank menu name in the 'Links' and removed any http:// called 'Gallery' not linking to anything and placed this in the main menu. I then added my gallery pages under it. For some reason the blank 'Gallery' attached itself to every post giving 404 errors. I assumed it was possible to add just a name to the menu just to add posts as drop downs! I hope I am making sense ;-)

Hi,

It's wierd, i cannot reproduce this issue. I created new menu item (with blank URL and label Gallery), then I add URL to gallery page, but I don't see 'gallery' at the end of posts URLs, maybe try to resave your permalinks.

If you can reproduce this issue, please send me a PM with backend access to your website, then I'll be able to check it exactly.

Hi Piotr

After I submitted a post here I removed the 'Gallery' menu and re-submitted the site to Google. It hapened on both sites when I created a blank menu so I'm pretty sure. I will re-save the permalinks also and revert back soon. Thanks again for your support

I had to add the plugin 'Simple 301 Redirects' to remove all the 404 pages. I had added 2 blank menu names 'galleries' and 'reviews' What then happened was that it created 404 errors by adding the name after every post in my site to both the names! e.g.

http://tonilaird.com/animal-photography/galleries
http://tonilaird.com/animal-photography/reviews

I used different names to my other sites using CloudHost and the same thing happened so I am sure there is a bug somewhere!

BTW I checked your 'Notify me when a reply is posted' but receive nothing to any posts in my email. Also checked spam folder :?:

Hi,

I'll check e-mail notifications, regarding the issue with 404 pages, could you check it with the default Wordpress theme, e.g. twenty twelve?

Hi Piotr

These are my live sites and happened on the theme when adding blank menus! I only noticed the 404 errors when logging into my Google web master account. I took a whole day creating 301 redirects for the 3 sites hence do not want to create another blank menu due to having to spend another day with 301 redirects and possibly effecting my Google page 1 ranking. There is no doubt the errors were caused by the blank menus
