I am currently at the 2.5 version and when i change to the short term support to get the 3.2 update and try to update it ends up giving me a white screen and doesnt work. I then have to reload from a backup.

How can I get the upgrade to 3.2 to work?

You firstly need to update Joomla! to 3.x version and then just install template in J!3.x version.
