my grid displays no recent activity, in the set up there is no user id attached to any of the gk buddypress widgets. if a members signs up and post a staus or phot does it automatically update on the grid?

is there a way to use a space in the grid to alert members of new updates i may have?

Hello,

This article should be helpfull:
http://www.gavick.com/blog/how-does-gk- ... ally-work/

Generally it may not be visible automatically - but with some delay, because GK grid and other widgets are cached.

Regarding your second question - you can use GK BuddyPress widget to display only your updates - you can specify user ID, and your update will be visible for other users on the grid.

If you don't specify any user ID - latest updates will be displayed.
