header expands when using logo

when I try to use the log field with css or image the header always expands. I've tried using really narrow and small images but it always expands vertically. It doesn't seem to matter what size the image is.
Unfortunately I'm testing this on a non public page right now so I have no link to give you. If you've had other experience with this problem how it was fixed would be helpful.

Did you tried to set the logo as a background image for the logo element?
