Full Color Sidebar

I would like to put a full color background whenever there is a sidebar on my page. How can I set it up. Whenever I try add the background to only shows behind the content. Please help me do this.

Ok, perhaps chrome developer tools or firefox firebug will be helpful. They allow to find elements and their css declarations which can be used then in override.css.
