inconsistent theme setup, non-working widget rules

WordPress theme dedicated to start-up websites with amazing CSS3 animated icons, price tables and parallax effect background.

I am trying to set up the theme and am majorly disappointed with the documentation (http://www.gavick.com/documentation/wor ... iguration/). Screenshots of the theme options interface without further comment is as helpful as having access to the theme options on my own install, at most I can verify that I have the same number of options and fields.

The quickstart file is the least helpful quickstart file of any themeclub or theme provider I have ever encountered - it's not made immediately clear that this is a full wp install and won't help those that want to transition from another theme. Other theme providers offer the option to import demo data - this is what you should offer through the theme options as well going forward if you want to ensure optimal adoption of the themes. Looking through these forums I am not the only one with these issues.

Once one as understood that the reference to widgets means that the homepage is fully setup through widgets, one also needs to have a clear understanding of where which widget is located (http://demo.gavick.com/wordpress/simpli ... _areas.png) and which text is used (you don't even take the time to properly sort them in the documentation or assign the same numbers used to the widget_areas.png). Your whole documentation is so damn lazy I wouldn't have purchased the lifetime theme membership had I known about this upfront - now I can just have the hope that you'll be implementing a proper documentation going forward as well as demo content import, not relying on widgets (although you could also prepopulate widget ciontent and add additional widgets to make the setup easier if you wanted to stick with widgets...).

Now to my main issue - non-working widget rules. I have set up the following for the "Text Widget' in the Header area:
'Visible at: No pages except: Select pgage to add Homepage'
The widget then still showed up on all other pages and I added the page ID. Still, the widget is showing everywhere. Seriously? This can be done better with Dynamic Widgets plugin... Do I need to revert to another plugin to get the functionality of your demo page?

I am looking for a comprehensive feedback, ideally with an estimate if you can better your theme documentation and implementation.

Thanks!

Oh, even worse, basing everything on widgets makes the localization with WPML even more complicated than it should be.

yet even worse, I am required to buy the 79 usd version of WPML if I want to translate widgets rather than 29 usd...

another issue is that your 404 displays:

Nothing Found
Apologies, but no results were found for the requested archive. Perhaps searching will help find a related post.

[Searchbutton with text "Search"] Search [Searchfield with text "Search"] Do you really think a user requires that many repetitions to understand that this is a search option?

Did you guys QA this theme? I do appreciate that there's a changelog, though which shows that my hope for improvement does have a basis :)

Hello,

Thanks for your feedback. We are going to add some improvements on our configuration pages.

Differences between quickstart and only theme files are described here:
http://www.gavick.com/documentation/cat ... t-package/

You can import WXR file with demo content (except widgets):
http://www.gavick.com/documentation/wor ... wxr-files/
and then use posts instead of widgets to generate your homepage:
http://www.gavick.com/demo/wordpress/si ... ge_id=2399

Regarding your problem with widget rules, could you send me a PM with backend access to your website? then I'll be able to check it, because I didn't notice problem with this feature.

If you want to translate widgets, you can use widget logic plugin with WPML ICL language codes (it's very easy, you can create e.g. 2 widgets in 2 languages and then assign them to different lanugage)
https://wpml.org/2011/03/howto-display- ... -language/

You can also change the text from 404 page.

Regarding mainbody widgets - you should have enabled "Widgets Display on Homepage" option from Template Options -> Basic tab if you want to display widgets in this area.

thanks for the thorough response. the option to set the homepage based on posts is preferrable to me, however I would want to ensure that the layout is the same as in your demo - especially the main image and form. is that feasable? that would also solve my widget issue...

Yes the layout is the same, please check this URL - it's Simplicity frontpage based on posts:

images here (linking to projects.gavick.com/[...]) do not display and there are no instructions on which tags to use where: http://www.gavick.com/demo/wordpress/si ... ge_id=2399

the import creates the demo page alright, however both the issue with widgets and manageability persists. The markup of the posts is HTML that is simply not translateable just like that. Seriously - you guys seem to have coding and design capability but where's the usability?

I've fixed the issue with these images, thank you for the information. Generally other users don't complain. Our themes are more expanded, sometimes have more widgets than others, so you have to put some effort to configure it.

You can also export your content, install quickstart package (all widgets, content etc), and then import your content again.

Regarding the problem with widget rules, I asked about your website backend access, it's only way to check your problem exactly.
