I would like to assign a custom html module to the User Area Module position, but it seems to be hard-coded so the only thing that shows up is a link to register or login. Any suggestions?

User area is not default module position, this is template reserved area for login/register/cart buttons. Please look at module positions, this position is always marked with different color like the 'menu' one. You can add you own module position in userarea, how to do it you can find here >> http://www.gavick.com/documentation/joomla-extensions/how-to-add-new-module-posihttp://www.gavick.com/documentation/joomla-extensions/how-to-add-new-module-position/
