Main story and headlines next to it

in the WP "News" template how do I change the main story andd the 5 stories next to it? And in what widget area is that main story contained?

Please go to Appearance -> Widgets
The widget You are searching for is first one in :Mainbody Top" widget position.
You can define data source (in quickstart it gets articles from categories slug/name world,us,entertainment,tech,health with offset set by 6) and few other parameters.

Sorry, I don't know what offset 6 is about or how to apply that to a post. Can you explain?

Offset - is exactly offset 
.
Lets assume You have 10 articles in category named test.
Now You would like to show 5 newest (ordered by their ID from higher - new to lower - older) but not show first two (2 newest), because they are highlighted somewhere else. Then You load 5 posts from category test and offset them by 2.
