title alias dash

why do all my home page titles have a dash in between the words?
EG: super-fast-police-dog-karly-awarded-for-collaring-violent-suspect

This is how Joomla create SEF URL's, as you can't use URL's with spaces every space char is changed to dash.

so how do I get rid of these dashes and will it be a disadvantage to be search engine friendly?

But you you want to translate space in URL? This is core Joomla mechanism and not template issue, for use any CMS can't generate URL"s with spaces inside

I'm talking about the dashes when it shows up on the template:

if you look at the words "Super-fast police dog Karly awarded for collaring violent suspect" on the home page of www.westendwiki.co.uk , they all have a "-" in between the words and also all the other titles in that module

Hmm… I still don't see this issue. I've visited your website and look for this phrase, find it here → screenshot and the title looks exactly like it is set in the back-end no additional dashes etc. The way how Joomla generate URL is not template issue and if you want to specify your own rewrite rules you need to use some 3rd party extension.
