Log-In Problem

When a member trys to sign into my website they get a '1064 error' and the whole website doesnt work for them until they clear there cache/cookies.

Any suggestions on what I should do?

I changed to the two templates that come with Joomla and neither have a log-in to test.

Please try adding this to your base link:
index.php/template/users
it should redirect you to login page.

With both the default templates I am getting a 404 error with the index.php/template/users

It seems like the problem is not related to our template. Perhaps you have installed some 3rd party extension that causes this problem?
Try disabling 3rd party modules and components one by one and check if login works fine.
If that will not help, perhaps updating Joomla or reuploading core files might help.

No 3rd party modules/plug ins have been installed recently.

The site is due an upgrade.

I notice a new feature were you can update via index.php?option=com_joomlaupdate

Do you recomend updating this way? or downloading the file and doing via FTP?

I would suggest reuploading with FTP.
But please make a backup of entire service first.
