user menu inside the login menu

Hi

Can you please help me to put a user menu inside the login menu? I am using the NEWS template on Joomla 2.5. I did install the quickstart but something went wrong and so I'm using only the template on a sub domain and trying to achieve the effect where after signing in and clicking the login button, a user menu is displayed to either, your profile or edit your profile or create an article or submit a weblink. So far thats the only thing am stuck on.
