How to enable 404 error page

I don't seem to be able to find how to enable a custom 404 error page. If a page is accessed that does not exist, I get the hosting default error page.

you have to change/modify link from joomla
BUT
as you saw sometimes errors are captured by the server settings - but we can not control that from template.
