Hi,

I have tried a few different accounts and I am not receiving password reset emails. I've seen a few different ways to configure the email settings, but i really don't know the best way to configure. Is there something that explains how the different email options work and which is preferred?

Thanks!

This is only Joomla! not template issue - for test you can switch to default template and see that the effect will be the same. Try to configure your gmail account as a sending server for tests and then contact with your hosting company to give your correct details. Tutorial for gmail configuration you can find here >> http://www.gavick.com/magazine/how-to-configure-joomla-25-to-send-email-using-gmail.html

I see that the template doesn't make a difference. Is there a how-to for setting up other than gmail email? what is the difference between php and smtp options?

This is not template but only Joomla! issue. Difference between SMTP and POP servers should explain you your hosting because you need to configure it according to your hosting details. Please just try to contact with your hosting support. More details about Joomla! mail configuration you will find here >> http://help.joomla.org/content/view/1445/196/
