Editing Homepage

Hi,

I want to keep most of the homepage structure (speakers, sponsors etc) however, rather than having the countdown and guitar animation, I would like to have a section of the front page as an introduction to the site where I can put various text, images etc.

Attached is a screenshot with using a text box widget in either the header or speaker sections. Clearly this isnt working as the background only shows in the centre of the page rather than full width. I'd essentially be looking for the section of the page under the header to be structured like the other pages on the site with the light grey background across the full page (but without the gk-breadcrumbs).

Please can you advise what I need to amend to achieve this.
