Adding a Child Theme to Fest

I am currently trying to add a child theme to Fest in order to further customize the theme. I have followed the WP standard to create the child theme as outlined here https://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes. Is there any extra steps that need to be taken when creating a child theme for Fest?

No, it should work fine. Also - if you would download quickstart package you would see that there is already prepared child theme ready to copy to your site.

When I apply the Child theme, without importing the parent theme's css, shouldn't there be no style applied to the site except for what is in the child theme correct?

Thats wrong assumption.
If you create clean child theme - it should look and act exactly as parent theme.
To make any changes you need to duplicate a file from parent theme to a child theme and make changes on it (file and folder structure needs to be the same).
