How can I customize the home page?

I've installed with success the quickstart package. But I'm experiencing many difficulties to understand how to manage/customize my site.
Please can you help me at least with some indications about how to customize the HOME PAGE, first I would like to know is how to add or disable widgets on it.

You can add widgets by menu: Appearance > Widgets.
Choose a Widget and drag it to the sidebar or other position where you wish it to appear. Once in place, WordPress automatically updates the Theme.
