Hi,

I would like to translate the most common words which appear on the template like written by, tagged under, comments, leave a reply etc., however, if I edit the gamenews.pot file and upload it to wp-content/themes/GameNews/languages, nothing changes. The expressions still appear in English.

I use Poedit for translation.

What else do I need to do to apply the translations?

Thank you.

Yes, I did. I uploaded both gamenews.pot and gamenews.mo to \wp-content\themes\GameNews\languages, theres is also an index.html file in the directory.

Nothing changed.

I want to avoid making the translations in the php files, it takes much more time.

You have to rename the POT file to PO extension :) POT means the PO file which is used as a base for translations :)

Hi.
First time I have just renamed .pot to .po and translated it using Poedit.. it did not worked, so then I used an option "create catalog from POT-file", selected GameNews.pot and translated it again... but it did not worked for me either

@OlafSK - I forgot small detail - you should rename the po and mo files to your language code, the default is en_US so you should rename files to en_US.po oraz en_US.mo - then it works fine, I've just tested it ;)

Oh, it's fun :) I have already tried to rename them to GameNews-en_US.*
Have not guessed, that I need to leave only lang code. Thanks, everything is ok now :)

I'm sorry, but I'm still a bit lost with these language files. Please confirm that the following steps must be done to have the proper translation work.

1. After installation, I have gamenews.pot and index.html in wp-content/themes/GameNews/languages
2. Download then open the gamenews.pot file with Poedit.
3. Translate the file, then save.
4. Create new catalogue from pot file, the output will be gamenews.mo and gamenews.po
5. Then rename all files according to you language >> hu_HU.pot, hu_HU.mo and hu_HU.po (leave gamenews from the file names)
6. Upload all three files to the directory.

Are these steps correct?

Thanks

Hi,

Did you changed the WordPress language in the wp-config.php file?

I am using the Publisher theme and performed exactly the steps as mentioned below. I must have done it 10 times already. The theme elements stay in English.
My language code is nl_NL and yes, I also changed this in the config file. Some core WP elements do show in Dutch correctly, but not the theme elements.

Here's what I did :

1. Open the meetgavernwp.pot file in wp-content/themes/Publisher/languages/ and edit in Poedit

2. Work on the translations and save the file as nl_NL.po

3. Upload the generated nl_NL.po and nl_NL.mo files to the above directory

The translations do NOT show up.

I tried to save as meetgavernwp.po and meetgavernwp.mo but also no luck.

I'm totally lost. How is this possible ?

Thank you for any help or step by step tutorial.

OK, solved the problem. I had a caching problem on the server.
I confirm that the explained steps work fine :)
