'new' tag net to titles

I really like the news_pro module but I would really like to extend the functionality of this module for my site.

I am interested to add a NEW or UPDATED marking tag next to the article's title, based on the date the article is created or edited. In other words I want to show which items are new as I want to use a alphabetical type of shorting. So I want some information regarding who to do it so and if anyone has succeded in doing something similar with what I want.
