Site Upgrade & potential eshop usage (virtuemart-k2mart-k2)

Hi there,

I am newbie in joomla development and try to build a site using one of gavick's templates - esport.

client plans to add e-shop functionality and has a list of 400 items/products in an old joomla site but for now he just wants a standard site refinement by upgrading the template / layout etc. all the items in his old joomla version 1.5x are inserted as items in k2 and no virtuemart or other eshop module.

as e-sport comes with virtuemart and i wonder
1. is there a way to import the k2 items to the new site (joomla 2.5x) automatically?
2. should i transfer them to virtuemart so that to have better handling or k2 is the way to go? how?
3. if there a solution to export from the 1.5x k2 content and import to the new e-sport site, should i try to find a way to transfer the items to virtuemat or leave them as k2?
4. what about k2mart? is it better to install it now that the new site is empty and then do the import?
5.is there a way to lock the e-shop functionality and leave it as a catalogue till the client decides to proceed to the e-shop upgrade?
6. how to build it so that looking forward it would be easier to run it as an e-shop.

Hi

1. K2 works for joomla 1.5 and 2.5 so in theory You should be able to simply copy tables for K2 and images.
2. I do not understand this question, can You please try to explain.
3. I can make a copy of a website and try using jUpgrade component. I think this supports an update of K2. Moving to VM is just too much work :)
4. I think it's better to install it before moving content.
5. If You are using K2mart and products are K2 articles, than You just need to disable K2mart plugin.
6. I would try to use jUpgrade first and than when site will be on joomla 2.5 to move rest of things or update what is possible.

any resource on how to do that?

2. I do not understand this question, can You please try to explain.

currently all products are included as items in K2. if i use the esport plugin it comes with virtuemart. the question is if it is preferable to stick with k2 vs vm or else transfer all items (how?) to virtuemart db and manage and new one from there.

3. I can make a copy of a website and try using jUpgrade component. I think this supports an update of K2. Moving to VM is just too much work :)

i have installed in a demo folder the esport template and wonder if i should start from scratch or go back to the old site and upgrade joomla and then install the new template i want to use. what do you suggest? so you say that i better stay with k2?

4. I think it's better to install it before moving content.

5. If You are using K2mart and products are K2 articles, than You just need to disable K2mart plugin.

if i am not going to use k2mart till client orders the eshop should i just go with k2 or i get some extra functionality by having k2mart(disabled) in the system?

6. I would try to use jUpgrade first and than when site will be on joomla 2.5 to move rest of things or update what is possible.

i had trouble replicating the esport structure and i preferred using the quick start version..

let's suppose i proceed per your suggestion. how can i test the whole site in another place and do not touch the live old joomla site?

thank you in advance for your support!

Hi

Acctually if You will use quickstart than it will be even harder. Basically, when You want to proceed from that than less trouple would be to move all articles manually :)

Please try my advice with jUpgrade first.

If I proceed with the jupgrade solution and manage to keep the items as k2 entries do i need to disable virtuemart so that there is no overlap? how can i replicate the layout using the k2 items only but give a look like the demo of this template (esport) ? is it possible or i need to install k2mart to get similar look/feeling? thank you in advance for your support!

Hi

First of all You need to make a copy of the site and work with it.

Look at this page: http://redcomponent.com/redcomponent/ju ... ins/page-5
You can see that there are additional plugins to upgrade most of the extensions with jUpgrade. So this will manage it for You automaticaly. From our side You will just to download a new eSport template for J2.5 and install it on updated website.

If You have questions about jUpgrade than You should try on their forum. Without this extension You will need to build whole site from scratch.

Upgrade worked and also managed to install the esport template but the ending result has nothing to do with the esport demo. how i can replicate it using the k2 items as products instead of vm?

It seems that i need to download manually all plugins and modules either from the download modules section or by unzipping some from the rest files archive. what are the steps i need to take so that to implement the e-sport structure, using my k2 items and ignoring any interference from vm in the layout?

Hi

Yes, upgrading this way You lose a quickstart, but it's still the fastest way. Now I advice to install quickstart in a different location. Get all modules used in quickstart and install in Your updated site. Get K2mart to have an ability to use K2 as products instead of VM. Last step is to copy all modules settings from quickstart to Your new site but pointing to Your categories, when You finish than it will be all :)

i am already following that process up to a point but it is really too slow...i wish there was a way to export the modules and plugins and input them rather than creating each one manually.

how can i do that "Last step is to copy all modules settings from quickstart to Your new site "

in terms of using k2mart, is there an option to somehow "disable" the eshop and use it as catalogue?

thank you for all the support!

Hi

Unfortunately there is no other way. You need to copy module after module manually.

About catalogue You can simply disable showing prices and add to cart in K2mart settings. This way You will have only products displayed thanks to K2.

What are the specific characteristics when inserting an item into the db? in other words, apart from a short text description, what are the image dimension i should use so that to the ending result resembles the e-sport demo? what about thumbnail images size/dimensions?

how do i make the k2mart / k2 categories showup only and disable the vm categories?

i was thinking to try the 1st solution by modifying the quick start rather than replicating it from scratch.

is there a way to import the k2 items from the old version to the new one?

thank you in advance for your time + support.

Hi

All characteristics You will find inside settings of the modules when You look into quickstart. We do not provide documentation of such thing, becuase it's accessible with quickstart already.

If You use K2mart than You can work with K2 or VM. So simply choose to use K2 and it's modules to display categories and so on.

This depends what will bring less work. Quickstart got about 10 - 12 modules You need to copy. Moving content from old site to quickstart may take more or less time depending of the amount of it.

I've already explained using jUpgrade with K2 plugin to move it from one to another site. But You may ask on K2 forum about it. I was able to simply copy tables and images once and it worked, but this method will break quickstart.
