Speed up joomla site

Hello All,

I am new to working with Joomla and the use of templates and I was wondering if someone could give me ideas on speeding up my site. I have been given some suggestion of gzip and jch plugin. I am using both and the site is still slow. I was also told to to turn off or delete some of the plug-ins, but I don't know which ones are needed or I can delete. Suggestions. The pages are loading about 3-5 seconds and some as much as 10... A little long...Thanks in advance.
