Typography - a general question

Is it necessary to apply a typography style through code editor? i was kinda hopping i could apply it by selecting a part of the text, clicking on a typography button and picking one out... but that procedure just deselects the text and puts the typography style tag on the beginning of the article... it does the same with inserting the link to the other article wia the button below the editor.

If its important, im using joomla 2.5.1 and World News II.

The button works only in this way that paste sample code to editor, you can mark some part of text and apply styling.
