modules displaying in wrong position

I am using World News II on Joomla 1.7. I have approximately thirty K2 categories and subcategories, most of which are assigned to menu positions.

On just two of those category list pages, I can assign a module to the right_top position and it will display exactly where it should - to the right of the mainbody component. But on all of the remaining category list pages, the module that is assigned to the right_top position, displays to the left below the mainbody where the module map shows user_1 would be. It even displays narrower as if there is something assigned to user 2-6, even though there is nothing assigned to those positions on category pages.

How can this possibly be? Any module assigned to right_top will display in the right_top position in only two categories, but on all the other category pages, it displays where user_1 should be.

Also, the modules display correctly on any single article page or item. And if I create a non-K2 category page, the modules will display correctly. It just seems to be acting so weirdly on K2 category list pages.

I have spent literally hours trying to sort this craziness out. I hope someone can help me solve this quickly. Like a lot of other people, I am up against a deadline and cannot afford to babysit this template forever.

Thanks.

I was able to resolve the problem myself, although I have no clue why the template was acting as it was. I copied the core World News II template files from my template download folders and overwrote the existing files on the server. It appears that the problem was either with

templates/gk_twn2/html/com_k2/templates/default/category.php

or

templates/gk_twn2/html/com_k2/templates/default/category_item_links.php.

I do not understand how whatever was wrong in those files affected approximately 30 category pages, but left two individual category pages undamaged. It seems that if it was going to break one category page, it would have broken all of them.

Nevertheless, the problem appears to be solved (for now). Hopefully it will not return.
