Upgrading GavickPro's Joomla 1.7.3 to v2.50

Since basically all 1.7.x files and extension installations are fully compatible with Joomla 2.5, I want to upgrade my Joomla 1.7.3 built with GavickPro quickstart to Joomla 2.5. There is no documentation anywhere in this support area how to do it.

I did 2 types of tests on a test local server (Localhost) - NO FTP no remote ISP required.

1. First, the QuickStart: I installed GavickPro Financial Business quickstart. After it installed working and great, I went to download the new Joomla 2.5 update zip file. There are 3 ways to update according to Joomla's documentation, but none of them works for a LocalServer localhost installation. At least I am getting:
-1- - An error has occurred. Copy failed
** I think this one is a permission problem. All of my dirs are 755 and files are all 644. But I owned all of them under my local server username as opposed to apache/php. I can do all 777 but its a big job to change them back. I need a better way to override the permission problem which I think is.

2. Second, I tried installing Joomla 2.5 full version on the test local server. After completed the installation, then I installed on the backend the "gk_financial_business_J!17" using the joomla installer. It went through after giving some permission changes to component and language. However, when I looked at the modules, there are only 3 items in the modules area. So, this file is not complete. So, question is, do I need to install the other file called "gk_financial_business_rest_files_J!17", it seems it has one module and 6 plug ins. But its not enough since on my current install from quick start, there are a lot of modules, NOT just 4 using this method of installation.

I need some guidance here of point me to a proper documentation.
Thank you.

The easiest way is to upgrade your Joomla from 1.7.3 version to 2.5, download template for Joomla 2.5 and overwrite all files via ftp connection.

Hello -
If you got my post, its not FTP, its a localhost server right next to me here at work. Again, problem is getting that error. So, its all about permission I think. I need a better way to circumvent that permission system but not have to chmod 777 them.

In addition, by overwriting all the files, will create problems since v2.5 creates some mysql files/tables for v2.5.

Hi

I was PM to look at this post. Unfortunately the update should be done as joomla recomends http://www.joomla.org/announcements/rel ... eased.html . We did not changed any of joomla core files, so there is no other way with Gavick templates.

If there is any problem with smply installing new joomla with installer than I'm affraid You will have to ask on Joomla forum, because I haven't seen problem with this yet. Not relevant if it was hosted online or localy.

Thanks Piotr. I think I just wait for 2.5.1. Its too much problems. It won't install getting copy error. I changed all the permissions and still the same. A lot of users have so much problems according to joomla's forums. Anyway, hopefully, GavickPro will have a FinancialBusiness with joomla 2.5.1 soon?

Oh Piotr, You always have the right answer. Its amazing, I lost hope already and you responded today. So, this means I can upgrade it to 2.5 tomorrow.

Hey, Joomla's release the latest to 2.5.1. So since above is not yet on your main download area, maybe you upgrade the core files to 2.5.1 before putting in for download.

Is there a list of files to replace. I need to see the files to replace so I can just replace if I can replace.

thanks.

HI

2.5.1 is strictly update to joomla. We did not changed anything there, so You can update it (and should) without worry :)

Thank you my friend. Ok - I am still running 1.7.3, I just backup my joomla/FinBusiness site, and backup also my mysql database to be safe.

Because I have done a lot so much time consumed, I can not start from scratch and use the fin business 2.5 yet, so I did the update using j2.5.1 update file.

I just upgraded my 1.7.3 with joomla 2.5.1 and control page info says its now 2.5.1. I am running on a local server localhost so I can do pretty much anything. First I had to change all my permission and give it all to apache/php (_www:70) then, I fired up the update from joomla 2.5.1.

Its amazing it went through just like that, but it has a few flukes. I followed all the joomla guide here from
http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=625&t=691030

1. The mysql table missing a few and need to fix - jooma Fix did that already and fine with the database fix.
2. Doing a discover and found a few joomla extensions needed fixing and did that too.
There is a GK plugins that were disabled: GK Cache. I enabled it and do another discover and did not come up. Maybe this needs updating to 2.5.1.
3. Warning is clear.

I did all the purging of cache, cleaning the browsers and all that. Those are easy and did a few times to make sure.

NOw biggest problem that came up and I still can not solve.

All my menu links and html links are gone. There are no links to anywhere. So all the menu css styles drop downs are gone for good I guess.

If I try to force the links and enter it on the browser, it will give me a big 404 Error. This means, all the links in the table do not exist anymore and its probably messed up somewhere.

One thing I found out from the GK template. Go to the GK Template on the backend, If I select Basic Settings, it displays two items that were not there which does not make sense - it says right under BASIC SETTINGS:
JDocumentHTML
JDocumentHTML

Anything you can help me with please? It could be a sql database and template fluke with joomla update 2.5.1, but I can not tell what really.

Thank you so much again.

Hello,
After so many forums in Joomla, I found out that the problem is with the GK template. Here is the quote from a GK expert below. So, I may need assistance (process) how to apply the 2.5 template to my existing 1.7.3. Because, by updating using joomla update 2.5.x, it actually gives database error which screw up the site.

After I update to 2.5.x, Do I need just to replace my template's /js/gk.scripts.js!

Do I need to replace others?

Then, do I need to hit the FIX database option in Joomla.... Apparently, there is a database error after updating to joomla 2.5.x

1 Database Problem Found

Database schema version (1.7.3-2011-11-10) does not match CMS version (2.5.1).

Other Information

Database schema version (in #__schemas): 1.7.3-2011-11-10.
Update version (in #__extensions): 2.5.1.
Database driver: mysqli.
62 database changes were checked successfully.
16 database changes did not alter table structure and were skipped.

Then, the problem, happens when I issue a database Fix.

=======
Quote:
"I am using GavickPro's 1.7.3 template which is completely compatible with Joomla 2.5.x"
This is incorrect!

The GK javascript used in the 1.7.3 templates does not function any longer on 2.5.x (outdated templates/templatename/js/gk.scripts.js!) and user needs to upgrade template. This is own experience with 22 client sites on 1.7.3 upgraded to Joomla 2.5 with a GK-template. The issue makes the menu links stop functioning

OP needs to restore backup, download template 2.5-version from https://www.gavick.com/support/updates.html? (needs login), upgrade to 2.5.1, FIX the DB issues that will show, install upgraded template from Gavick (all GK templates have been upgraded on 31st January) using the Read-me as distributed with the template and issue is resolved

This issue is extensively covered in the GK-forums where the moderators explain: https://www.gavick.com/support/forums/8 ... tml#p60033
safest way is overwrite all template files
(do that with ftp)
