New Module postions: Top banner, Bottom banner

I'd like to add two banners to the v1.7 Financial Business template....one centered above everything and one centered below everything. I've tried several other mods on the forum and each seems to be doing something so specific I just can't make the translation. I'm not sure which block to make the changes in.....nav and footer?

Can anyone give a step by step with code?

1.) add new modules to index.php.
This makes it show up in the template as selectable.

2.) Then we have to change the template.CSS to

3.) and the templateDetails.xml to define the div

4.) alter footer.php

5.) nav.php

6.) alter GK.stuff.css

So far I've tried to follow the following links and the closest I get is displaying an empty box in either positions with other modules being moved out of place..... My install is local, but i can put it live if anyone can help.
